Founded as American District Telegraph in 1874, ADT invented an early form of burglar alarm, where a central alert box was connected to paying clients’ homes or business premises. Expanding rapidly in the twentieth century, by the 1960s the business was the target of anti-trust action as they operated a monopoly in many American cities.
Despite technological developments and expanding into new markets, ADT’s business model revolves around: providing alarms to consumers and larger commercial clients. In 2024, the group had a brief foray into the solar energy market to refocus entirely on this business. Most of the ADT revenue now comes from the US consumer and small business segment. The company’s largest shareholders are Apollo Investment Management and State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance.
