Centrica (CNA) – Introduction and background |
Centrica (CNA) is a British multinational energy company, formerly part of British Gas.
Centrica was formed in 1997 following the demerger of British Gas, a state-owned energy company. Previously operating as a state-run monopoly, British Gas was privatised in 1986 and split into two separate, publicly listed companies in 1997. Centrica inherited British Gas’s retail and trading operations, while the exploration and production business became BG Group. The company is headquartered in Windsor.
Centrica’s primary business line is the supply of electricity and gas to residential and business customers in the UK, including the provision of home services such as boiler installation and maintenance. The company operates under multiple brands, including British Gas in the UK and Direct Energy in North America. Centrica also has interests in energy exploration and production, though it has been reducing its exposure to this sector in recent years.
Centrica debuted on the London Stock Exchange on its formation in 1997, trading under the ticker CNA. Its largest shareholders are Schroders Investment Management and Vanguard.
