Markets are closely watching key events that could directly impact prices, particularly the release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for January and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s testimony before Congress.

The January inflation report is expected to show a steady overall CPI at 2.9%, unchanged from the previous month. However, core inflation (excluding energy and food) may decline from 3.2% in December to 3.1%, marking its lowest level in over three and a half years. This could strengthen expectations for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates twice this year.

Meanwhile, Powell’s testimony will be scrutinised for insights into the Fed’s monetary policy outlook. Investors will seek clarity on economic adjustments amid President Trump’s policies, including tax cuts, crackdowns on illegal labor, and fluctuating tariffs—some imposed, lifted, or potentially introduced for the EU. A key focus will be whether the Fed is willing to tolerate inflation above its target and lower interest rates, particularly under pressure from Trump, who argues they remain too high.

Investing in CFDs involves a high degree of risk that you will lose your money due to the use of leverage, particularly in fast moving markets, where a relatively small movement in the price can lead to a proportionately larger movement in the value of your investment. This can result in loses that exceed the funds in your account. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and you should seek independent advice if necessary.
