Founded in 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly, a pharmaceutical chemist and veteran of the American Civil War, Eli Lilly and Company is one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical firms. The company develops, manufactures, and markets pharmaceutical products across various therapeutic areas. Eli Lilly introduced the first commercially available insulin in 1923 and has maintained a significant presence in diabetes care. Its most notable drugs include the Polio vaccine, the famous antidepressant Prozac, and various antipsychotic drugs.
Following a 1972 IPO, Eli Lilly and Company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, trading under the ticker LLY. It is a component of the S&P 100 and S&P 500 indices. The largest single shareholder is the Lilly Endowment, one of the world’s largest charitable foundations, founded by the Lilly family.
