GE extends across multiple sectors, with leading divisions in aerospace, especially airplane engine manufacture, healthcare, and power. The company first appeared in 1889 selling early electric lamps and has since diversified and spread across the globe. The 2021 announcement of the business’ splitting into three more focused sectors grew out of an attempt to streamline the various operating segments.
GE is listed on the NYSE and was one of the original constituent companies of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, where it remained until 2018, as the last of the original companies on the list. The current GE listing will be inherited by the specialized aerospace division when the three-way split is complete at some point after 2024. The largest shareholders are Capital Research & Management and Vanguard.
