Founded in 1986 by Chuck Hull, 3D Systems was responsible for the invention of stereolithography, the first commercially viable rapid prototyping technology, in the field more popularly known as 3D Printing. Through organic growth and acquisitions, 3D Printing has consolidated a large portion of the total prototyping sector into a single company and its main competitor is Stratasys.
3D printing experienced a speculative boom in the mid-2010s that has since subsided, and 3D Systems faces growing competition from rivals within the sector. Since its 1990 IPO, the stock has experienced periodic price spikes followed by declines to lower stable ranges. The largest shareholders are Vanguard, Blackrock and State Street.
