Founded by Wallace Abbott in 1888 and originally named Abbott Alkaloidal Company, Abbott Laboratories is a major American healthcare company, with business lines in medical devices, over-the-counter pharmaceutical products, nutrition and diagnostics. The company’s drug development division was spun off as AbbVie in 2011.
