Berkshire Hathaway is an American multinational conglomerate holding company. Through its subsidiaries, the conglomerate focuses on insurance and reinsurance, freight rail transportation, utility and energy generation, and distribution. Its CEO, Warren E. Buffett, is one of the most well-known business magnates and fundamental investors in modern history.

Through its major subsidiaries, Berkshire Hathaway provides property, casualty, life, accident, and health insurance; and operates railroad systems in the United States. As a diversified holding company, it also holds interest in coal mining assets while operating interstate pipelines and natural gas distribution and storage facilities. Additionally, it provides recreational vehicles, consumer goods, and logistics services including grocery and household goods distribution.
Berkshire Hathaway began offering Class B shares in May 1996 on the NYSE, as a more modestly priced alternative to its Class A shares. Currently, its largest shareholders are Vanguard, Blackrock, and State Street Corporation.
