Originally founded as Confinity by a group of investors including Peter Thiel, PayPal initially focused on security for handheld apps. During the 2000s the company achieved considerable market success by operating as a payments provider, initially in close partnership with online shopping provider eBay.
PayPal is unusual in that it has undergone two separate IPOs: first in 2002, a success that saw eBay quickly acquiring a controlling stake and taking the company private, and again in its current form on the NASDAQ in 2015. The stock has seen significant gains since that date, and is regularly used as an investment in the overall financial technology sector.
