One of the oldest banks in the US, Citigroup traces its history back to 1812, when its first president Samuel Osgood received a banking charter from the State of New York. The bank grew greatly in the early twentieth century, becoming the first contributor to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 1913. Since then, it has retained a dominant position in the American and global financial markets, despite major losses through subprime mortgage exposure in 2007. The company operates worldwide and divides its business into two segments, retail and wealth management, which services individuals, and corporate and institutional, which services large businesses.
The current listing of the Citi group of companies, which has included Citibank, Citigroup, and Citicorp, launched on the New York Stock Exchange in 1998. This stock, which trades under the ticker C, is a constituent of the S&P100 and S&P500 indices, with major institutional investors including Blackrock and Vanguard the largest shareholders.
