Founded in 1962 by Sam Walton, Walmart grew from a single discount store in Rogers, Arkansas, to the world’s largest supermarket. The company pioneered the out-of-town distribution centre, and operates a chain of hypermarkets, discount department stores, and grocery stores, serving millions of customers weekly. Walmart’s business segments include Walmart U.S. and Walmart International, and the company is active in ecommerce and its brick-and-mortar business. Today, Walmart operates over 10,000 stores in 20 countries, offering a diversified, low-cost product range.
Walmart trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticket WMT. Though it’s a constituent stock of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P100, and S&P500, the Walton family owns 37% of outstanding shares. The next largest shareholders are major institutional investors including Vanguard and Blackrock.
