A position is the fundamental unit of any investment – holding a position means you are invested in an asset, be it a stock, forex position or anything else. Investors hold positions in assets they believe will increase in value and return to the market to sell them at the prevailing price. Different assets trade in very different ways and some positions are difficult to enter or exit.
In the stock market positions are publicly declared and traded openly on an exchange. This makes keeping track of positions and their holders simple, but also increases the reporting requirements for market participants.
In some private markets, positions do not have to be declared. This is the case for derivative contracts or some private debt instruments which are traded over the counter by agreement between participants. Finding a fair market price is normally more complicated for these investments, but they offer greater flexibility to investors and the ability to access opportunities not available on public markets.
