A quote is the most recent traded price of an asset. Additionally, bid quotes and ask quotes refer to current live market prices where a trader is willing to deal. Quotes allow traders to finding a price for their asset whether they are buying or selling, and in most financial markets this information is available publicly.
Quotes include information about both price and volume, and in terms of live market prices, come in two varieties, bid, and ask. A bid quote is the price level at which another trader is willing to buy an asset, and the ask quote is the price at which they are willing to sell. When looking at quotes of recent trades, you should be able to confirm both the volume of the asset sold and the price at which the trade was executed.
Participants in financial markets known as market makers offer continual bid and ask quotes. This means they are always willing to buy and sell a security up to a certain volume and at a set price. This is a vital function for the markets generally as it allows investors to access liquidity, and prevents, at least in theory, investors from being stuck with unsaleable assets.
To maintain their status as a market maker, market making firms must continually publish both bid and ask quotes, and make available their recent deals in the form of historical quotation data. This allows market participants to trust they have received the best price when they execute a trade.
