Disney (DIS) – Introduction and background |
Walt Disney Company (DIS) is an American entertainment and media conglomerate with a long history. Founded in 1923 by Walt Disney and Roy Disney, the company has since grown into one of the most prominent media organizations globally both directly and through many subsidiary brands.
Disney’s portfolio includes film production studios (Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm), television networks (ABC, ESPN, Disney Channel), streaming services (Disney+, Hulu), theme parks and consumer merchandise based off well-known brands. The company has produced many well-known films popular in the US and abroad.
Walt Disney went public in 1957 in a NYSE IPO. Since then, the stock has become a favourite for long-term investors, providing a consistent dividend over many decades. Like many streaming services, the stock benefited hugely from the COVID pandemic, before seeing a return to more usual levels afterwards. The largest shareholders are Vanguard, Blackrock and State Street.
